Intergenerational LGBTQIA2S+ Art Hangout
This is a monthly gathering for LGBTQIA2S+ folks* of all ages to come together, hang out, and make art!
Intergenerational community is essential for young queer people; whether it’s to discuss inherently queer topics, to model things like ‘chosen family’, or simply for representation and kinship. It’s also nice for queer folks to have a safe space to hang out, where there is no pressure to be doing anything other than just existing and creating!
We have lots of space–come sit at a table with new friends, or carve out a cozy corner for yourself! You can bring your own materials, or we’ll have some basics set out (collage materials, paper, pencils, etc!). Folks are also welcome to bring a book, homework, or other project to work on.
Access to the hangout is sliding scale (pay what you feel comfortable) from $0-10, which supports our ongoing programming and materials costs. No one turned away or judged for lack of funds.
Sign-in/sign-out is required. No registration required, just show up!
Stay for the full time or just stop by for a bit!
Minors (folks under 18) who attend without a parent/guardian must have a current liability waiver with ILYouth2 (available at the door, or email daelyn@ily2online.com to sign one in advance).
*LGBTQIA2S+ folks are welcome to bring allies to these art hangouts (eg: LGBTQIA2S+ parents can bring their children who do not identify as LGBTQIA2S+ ; LGBTQIA2S+ youth can bring their parents and/or siblings who do not identify as LGBTQIA2S+ ; and any LGBTQIA2S+ folks can bring supportive friends and/or partners who do not identify as LGBTQIA2S+). Allies are guests during this time, and expected to behave in ways that center the autonomy and care of our LGBTQIA2S+ community members
<3 Thanks xoxo
LGBTQIA2S+ stands for: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender/Trans/Nonbinary/Gender Non-conforming Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, and Two-Spirit

Sound & Vision: Building an Immersive Audio-Visual Installation
Sound & Vision: Building an Immersive Audio-Visual Installation
In collaboration with Electronic Music Club, ILYouth2 is excited to present Sound & Vision: Building an Immersive Audio-Visual Installation.
In this 3-day collaborative camp, participants will design and build an interactive sound installation that invites the public to play, experiment, and engage. Blending music technology and visual art, students will transform a space at the Lloyd Center into an immersive, living artwork inspired by installations like Meow Wolf and Hopscotch. Through sound design and hands-on building techniques, campers will create a space that feels alive with sound and movement—an experience designed to spark curiosity for both its creators and its audience.
For this collaborative camp, campers will spend part of the day in the Electronic Music Club (EMC) studio, and part of the day in the ILYouth2 studio. Both studios are in the Lloyd Center Mall, just a few units away from one another.

Meet Your Gremlin, Make Your Gremlin
Summer Camp Week 1:
Meet Your Gremlin, Make Your Gremlin
For this year’s special featured artist camp, ILY2 and ILYouth2 are excited to be bringing Umico Niwa to Portland!
In this camp, campers will utilize Jungian active imagination techniques to go into our inner subterranean spaces and meet the inner gremlins—the little aspects of self that delight in producing chaos and malfunction. Campers will sculpt these figures out of organic materials such as discarded potatoes, orange peels, sticks and flower petals.
***
About the Instructor:
Umico Niwa received her MFA in Sculpture + Extended Media from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond in 2020. Rejecting Western notions of personhood, Niwa considers alternative modes of existence unbridled by bodily restrictions or gender constructs. Her creations speak to a state of being defined by perpetual movement - a flower, wilting; a fruit ripening. A seed vault, a genetic sequence, a sensorium, a somatic memory bank. A valley full of weeds, bursting with life.

STOP MOTION ANIMATION!
Summer Camp Week 3:
STOP MOTION ANIMATION!
This weeklong camp is an introduction to animation through stop motion! While there are many different mediums to animate in, stop motion is one of the most accessible and fun for young artists to get started in. We’ll explore the process behind crafting a compelling story with interesting characters, see how environments can add to the storytelling, understand the visual ‘principles’ that make animation work, and learn how to collaborate with a small group to make one cohesive short film. We’ll also be taking a look at the pipeline of professional work from Pixar, Disney and Laika films, and give campers a better understanding of how films like this get made!
***
About the Instructor:
Amelia is a CG Animator and Layout Artist by trade, and is new to the Portland art scene, with 2 years of experience in Children’s TV animation. She loves to inject humor and action into her animations and drawings; making audiences feel and match the energy she puts into her work is one of the most gratifying parts of the industry. Her work has been included on Disney Jr’s “Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures” Season 1, “Firebuds” Seasons 2 and 3, and has also produced her own animated short film “Pizza Knights” (2022).

Paper Mache, Recycled Art, and Junk Journaling!
Summer Camp Week 4:
Paper Mache, Recycled Art, and Junk Journaling!
In this special camp, we'll be exploring Recycled Art and Junk Journaling with Natalie in the mornings, and paper mache in the afternoons with Megan!
Mornings: Recycled Art and Junk Journaling
Recycled art and junk journaling is a camp to teach that you can make art from anything! The artists will learn to repurpose items that would often be thrown away, and turn them into art. They will also learn that journaling can be for everyone. You don’t need fancy papers and stickers or writing skills to have a journal - you can fill it with junk! We will experiment with zines, recycled paper flowers, collaging, diy stickers, and basic book binding to create a journal.
Afternoons: Paper Mache Flower Garden
Together we’ll transform everyday materials like cardboard, newspaper and glue into a flower garden! Campers will find flower inspiration from artists today and throughout art history. Come play with everyday materials, bold shapes, expressive textures and vibrant colors. Leave with your own original paper mache flower sculptures!

About the Instructors:
Natalie Galbraith (she/her) is a life long lover and learner of all things arts and crafts. She received a BA in Digital Communication Arts and minor in Photography from Oregon State University. She has experimented with many different art practices including photography, sound, book making, print making, fused glass, crochet, theatre, and dance.
Megan Chin (she/they) is a queer mixed-race Chinese American visual artist based in Portland, Oregon. Megan earned a BFA in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art while concentrating on gender studies. Their work uses a mix of materials as well as prioritizes art as social practice. Megan has received grant funding from the Regional Arts and Culture Council as well as the Precipice Fund to organize Anticapitalism Artists Book Club (AABC) which provides free books, sustained gatherings and co-created art offerings in response to their readings.

Thursday, March 27th: PLACES THAT MATTER with Laura Halsey Brown
In PLACES THAT MATTER, campers will focus on the idea of memory and place; as Laura shares why places matter to her, and how these themes show up in her own artwork. Campers will be led through projects utilizing drawing, painting, collage and more—creating mixed media works that relate to their own special places.
Laura Halsey Brown (www.laurahalseybrown.art) is a neurodiverse interdisciplinary artist presently based on the Washington coast. She has worked nationally/internationally. Her work responds to psychological aspects of place. In her present work, she uses architectural forms, drawings and found architectural materials. These are incorporated with several mediums and processes within each work, including: cyanotype, mark-making, language, printmaking and encaustic. Her art typically employs a combination of modest materials to produce subtle conceptual or formal effects. She layers imagery to reflect a psychological layering of experience, through which to contemplate our layers of time, place - and memory itself. Her MFA exhibition from California Institute for the Arts was an interdisciplinary installation about the philosophy of nature; combining video, printmaking and sculpture. She moved to New York City after graduating, where she primarily focused on moving image works. She began curating for arts spaces such as The Kitchen and The Knitting Factory (NYC), Woodstock Center for Photography(NY), Philadelphia Center for the Arts (PA) and Art House (Dublin). She also created a series of place-based screenings in public spaces. During this period, she showed her site-responsive installations nationally and internationally, including at the New Museum in 2001 (based on a LMCC World Trade Center Residency), and White Columns, Art in General and spaces throughout Europe. In 2002, she moved to Rotterdam and received a grant to create public art works that focused on city architecture by local architects. Five years later, she moved to San Francisco and started ‘senseofplace LAB’. This work was a series of temporary works that responded to location, an architectural setting or social landscape – to heighten a sense of place.

Wednesday, March 26th: STORYTELLING with Wonderwood’s Mike Bennett, Frank, & Heaven-Leigh
For this special day of our Featured Artists Spring Break Camp, we're bringing you THREE artists from the magical Wonderwood Springs! Over the course of the day, campers will explore various mediums for storytelling!
Mike Bennett will lead a keychain making workshop, where campers will bring something from their imagination to life as a tangible, 3d object. Using wood and paint, campers will paint an object, creature, animal, whatever they want! Mike will also bring trinkets from his personal collection to be transformed! Together they will turn the trinket / painting into a keychain!
Frank will guide campers in a mini clown school, where she will teach the art of storytelling through body, face, and vocal effects. Campers will be guided in creating a character to embody and create key tenants of this character, i.e. how they move, how they talk, how they think; and practice stepping into a character and acting. This will include warm up exercises popular in theater, and a little history of clowning as performance.
Heaven-Leigh will guide campers through a world building workshop where they'll use written words to build a world (or many worlds) in a sci fi future! Campers will practice using what they already know to build new things, like creating new weather or money systems, new languages, new days of the weeks and months, etc., and write some basic information about their imagined world. Campers will create a short story featuring their trinket they created with Mike and the character they worked on with Frank incorporated into their new world.
Wonderwood Springs is a fantasy gathering place and a unique coffee shop and restaurant experience in the St Johns neighborhood of North Portland. The Wonderwood universe also includes a 7,000 square foot immersive mini golf experience and gift shop. You can find the ILYouth2 community at Wonderwood Springs on the second Monday of each month from 5-8pm, for our special art hangouts!
Mike Bennett is an illustrator, immersive space designer, and self-proclaimed public joy creator. A lifelong cartoon enthusiast, Mike creates outdoor art via lawn signs, scavenger hunts, and educational displays like A to Zoo. Mike has built a community of 2 million+ global social media followers and immersive experiences like Dinolandia, a prehistoric adventure, and Wonderwood Springs, a fantasy-inspired cafe, restaurant, and mini-golf course. Wonderwood Springs is located in the St. Johns neighborhood in North Portland and is open for adventurers of all ages to explore the magic and wonder contained within its walls.
Emily “Frank” Newton is an international comedic performer. Originating from Australia, she now resides in Portland, Oregon. Emily has performed both nationally and internationally with companies including Terrapin Puppet Theater (AUS), Oregon Children’s Theater (OR, USA), CoHo Productions (OR, USA), The Children’s Art Theater of China (Shanghai, CHN), and Dell’Arte International (CA, USA). Newton is interested in creating/performing eccentric, fully embodied characters that live in direct contact with an audience. Her work reflects an ongoing interest in exploring the boundaries between performer and audience. Emily holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Ensemble-Based Physical Theater from Dell’Arte International CA, is the co-artistic director of the CoHo Clown Cohort (PDX), and is a faculty member of the Institute of Contemporary Performance in Portland, Oregon.
Heaven-Leigh is ready for a good time and believes that we could all get there together if everyone just read a little more. She holds an MA in Critical Studies from the Pacific Northwest College of Arts and will not shut up about science fiction. She’s always like, “What is this text really saying?” and “Could we learn something from this?” and “Thinking we should start to build the world we want instead of letting the current state of things numb us and freeze us out from our potential teehee.” While pursuing both her undergraduate and graduate degrees, she gained experience working in a diverse range of spaces, including psychology labs, classrooms, and art centers, and facilitated two international conferences in Berlin, Germany. She currently leads semi-regular reading seminars at Parallel Worlds bookstore and works with Mike and Frank at Wonderwood Springs in St. Johns.
