Micropublishing & Storyboarding Camps!

two camps this week!

[more info & enroll here for: Mircropublishing!]

[more info & enroll here for: Storboarding!]

ABOUT Mini Micropublishing 4 Zinsters in the Making!: This camp is focused on the practical and impractical lessons in zine making from two queer archivists; Buck and Blue. The history of zine making is rich and deep, and Portland is one of the best places to learn about it in the country. We bring together movements, anecdotes, moments and materials influenced by and explored within zines. We find it important to share the multifaceted cultural context behind zine making, and our experience in the local scene and enthusiasm for alternative perspectives means we're excited to give youths the means to create their own context and meaning within what they want to generate already. Art and writing can both be avenues to explore concepts that might be discouraged under a regime with an agenda. We want to create space for new thoughts and new zines, always.

ABOUT Storyboarding: In this hands-on camp, students will create their own storyboards from start to finish that is old school and drawn by hand! Taking inspiration from Joseph Campbell’s The Hero’s Journey, campers will invent bold characters, face exciting challenges, and build complete story arcs.
Over the week, they will explore visual storytelling, character design, and camera angles, creating short scenes that could be animated in the future. By Friday, each student will have a colorful 8–12 panel storyboard telling a story entirely of their own creation.
This camp sparks imagination, hones drawing skills, and teaches the art of narrative storytelling - perfect for young artists, storytellers, and future filmmakers or animators!

New Sounds Skool

[more info & enroll here!]

ABOUT: A five-day “experimental music starter pack” where each day explores a different way of making and thinking about sound—from building contact-mic junk instruments to sampling, radio, field recording, and performance. Together, we’ll create our own instruments, recordings, and a collaborative “concept album,” while experimenting with how music can come from everyday objects, places, and ideas. The week ends with a playful, semi-improvised performance shaped by the group’s discoveries, open to all levels of experience and curiosity.

INSTRUCTOR BIO: David Weinberg (he/him) is the founder and lead teacher of New Sounds Skool, a lifelong dabbler of the arts whose work bridges experimental music, education, and collaborative play. With over 20 years of teaching experience across public elementary schools and Montessori and Waldorf preschools—and a background in underground noise music, intermedia art, and early childhood education (M.A.T., Evergreen State College)—his approach is grounded in the belief that “everything goes with everything.” New Sounds Skool extends this ethos into a vibrant, child-centered music program where structure and spontaneity meet, inviting young people to build skills, explore sound, and imagine new possibilities for what music can be.

Game Lab

Game Lab

[more info & enroll here!]

ABOUT: This camp is aimed at storytellers, nerds, and gamers! Campers will explore all the elements of creating a card, board, or simple ttrpg. We’ll look at lots of rad, independent and DIY games, then bringing our own ideas to life. Campers can expect opportunities to make clay game pieces, zine rulebooks or gamebooks, cards, boards, and maybe even playmats!? There is no expectation to have a finished game at the end of the week (though it certainly could happen!), and campers are welcome to bring existing game projects or ideas to the table, or to come completely fresh!

INSTRUCTOR BIOS: Erika and daelyn met through Marrow PDX, and have known each other for almost a decade! Erika has previously taught ceramics and zine camps at ILYouth2, and daelyn has taught game design camps (among many others) at ILYouth2 and is also the director here. This is Erika and daelyn’s first time teaching a camp together collaboratively! They’re excited!

daelyn lambi (they/them) is a working artist, writer, educator, and youth advocate. Making and playing games is a significant part of their own creative practice, and they have made both digital and physical games. Their favorite games are ones that don’t require a lot of physical tools (like a zine and map, maybe some cards!) but still create entire worlds through player engagement.

Erika Rier (she her) is an interdisciplinary artist mostly focused these days on ceramics and art zines. Her work seems to change how feminine people are perceived in art and the world.

Creative projects will include collage, printmaking, papermaking, zines, political posters, and more! We’ll culminate our time together by creating a collaborative newspaper that explores campers’ interests and ideas!

INSTRUCTOR BIO: Rimona (Mo) Eskayo (they/them) is a Portland-raised artist and educator who believes in the power and imagination of youth. As an educator, Rimona supports young artists to find their skills and confidence across mediums and artistic disciplines, encouraging collaboration, question-asking, mistake-making, and hitting save a few extra times for good measure. They bring over a decade of experience designing and teaching arts, design, and multimedia programming for students in grades K-12 and beyond. They’ve taught across institutional and DIY art spaces including Portland Public Schools, Independent Publishing Resource Center, Make Fun Studios, Sexual/Gender Minority Youth Center, Saturday Academy, OMSI’s Teen Tech Center, Everyone On, Iowa State University, and University of Southern California.

Sewing Camp!

[more info & enroll here!]

ABOUT: Explore hand and machine sewing! Start the week with creating one-of-a-kind stuffies (or plushies) from your own imagination, learning about patterns, seam allowances, and assembly techniques. Follow that with projects to learn and practice machine sewing, as well as measuring, ironing, and safe use of the rotary cutter.

INSTRUCTOR BIO: Xea (she/her) As a child, my grandmother found me making doll clothes with tape, and introduced me to the imaginative possibilities of sewing. Through the years I have enjoyed mending, embellishing, altering, redesigning, and creating practical, functional, and beautiful things, but my favorite creative outlet is sharing the magic of sewing with others. I enjoy collaborating and working through the challenges as a project comes together. I have been teaching youth sewing since 2016, developing skill-building projects and patterns that incorporate scraps and reclaimed materials, and inspire individual expression.

DATE: Saturday, April 25th
TIME: 2-5 pm

This is a monthly gathering for LGBTQIA2S+  folks* of all ages to come together, hang out, and make art!

Intergenerational community is essential for young queer people; whether it’s to discuss inherently queer topics, to model things like ‘chosen family’, or simply for representation and kinship. It’s also nice for queer folks to have a safe space to hang out, where there is no pressure to be doing anything other than just existing and creating!

  • We have lots of space–come sit at a table with new friends, or carve out a cozy corner for yourself! You can bring your own materials, or we’ll have some basics set out (collage materials, paper, pencils, etc!). Folks are also welcome to bring a book, homework, or other project to work on.

  • Access to the hangout is sliding scale (pay what you feel comfortable) from $0-10, which supports our ongoing programming and materials costs. No one turned away or judged for lack of funds.

  • No registration required, just show up!

  • Stay for the full time or just stop by for a bit!

  • Minors (folks under 18) who attend without a parent/guardian must have a current liability waiver with ILYouth2 (available at the door, or email daelyn@ily2online.com to sign one in advance).

*LGBTQIA2S+ folks are welcome to bring allies to these art hangouts (eg: LGBTQIA2S+ parents can bring their children who do not identify as LGBTQIA2S+ ; LGBTQIA2S+ youth can bring their parents and/or siblings who do not identify as LGBTQIA2S+ ; and any LGBTQIA2S+ folks can bring supportive friends and/or partners who do not identify as LGBTQIA2S+). Allies are guests during this time, and expected to behave in ways that center the autonomy and care of our LGBTQIA2S+ community members

Umico Niwa exhibition opening at ILY2

We invite folks to join us at ILY2’s Pearl District gallery for the opening of Umico Niwa’s exhibition
the disappearance of my testicles,
and other such mysteries regarding motherhood

1-3pm
at ILY2 (925 NW Flanders)

Umico led our 2025 summer camp Meet Your Gremlin, Make Your Gremlin. She misses her campers and hopes they might come visit the opening! We invite all ILYouth2 families and communities to come to the opening, or to see the exhibition any other time while it is up!

Last winter, in the closet of my childhood bedroom, I excavated a self-portrait from middle school. My eyes are dull, my affect flat, and in the bottom right hand the title reads: me (depressed).

I have deep seated memories of drawing myself at that age that every so often come to the forefront of my mind - a reminder that this tangled web of melancholy in my heart has been a steady bedfellow since youth.

Having undergone gender affirming surgery nearly a decade ago, I am riddled with regret. Not with being transgender, but rather I am afflicted with a constant low-grade baby fever. The hurdles I would have to clear to adopt, to have a home, to even simply maintain a steady partnership, reside high upon the moon.

The works on display are excerpts of my journal entries, interspersed with drawings. They depict times that I have experienced moments of levity beyond emptying cups and bed rotting with yet another lover. I have found that it is when I’m caring for others, solely immersed in the act of mothering, that this sense of self-indulgent angst momentarily ceases.

It is common for artists to reveal the depth of our personal lives, the tenor of our souls, the joys and grief that have taken hold of our heart from a young age, who we love and what we care for. In the midst of preparing for this show though, I made the choice to entomb a few of my journals in their frames, as I am not ready to share them with the public so readily. This selection of writings and drawings are safely sealed away and will remain so until my death, do as you wish upon my passing.

Umico Niwa (b. 1991, Nagoya, Aichi, Japan) lives and works between the USA and Japan. Recent solo and two-person exhibitions include: Memory Palace at The Asia Society, Houston (2025); Gut Friendly, Public Gallery, London (2025); Becoming Feral, Towada Arts Centre, Japan (2024); The Harbinger of Luck: Made of Kisses and Clovers x+x+, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Texas (2024) My Life Inside a Shoe, XYZ Collective, Tokyo (2023); and The Quantified Elf (and how it came to love itself), Someday, New York (2022). Select group exhibitions include: Sculpture Center, New York (2025); Chanel Nexus Hall, Tokyo (2024); Simon Subal, New York (2022); Kristina Kite, Los Angeles (2021); and Miriam in New York (2020). She was a resident at The Houston Museum of Fine Arts (2023 - 2025) and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art (2022).

In this one-day camp we’ll be looking at the function of monsters across time and culture! Monsters can be ways to make tangible our fears, anxieties, oppressors—or they can act as protectors. Do monsters inspire us to be heroes, or are they misunderstood? We’ll look at monsters in art, then create our own stories and the monsters that inhabit them, using a variety of mediums ranging from 3d cardboard masks to 2d papercut collage paintings.

Our Spring Break Camp is PROJECT-BASED!
Each day we’ll be learning new skills as we tackle ONE! BIG! PROJECT!

On Wednesday, youth will transform the ILYouth2 Mini—a miniature art gallery in an old dollhouse! We’ll look at examples from little art galleries (similar to little free libraries) to BARELY FAIR, a traditional art fair that shows 1:12 (dollhouse scale!) artworks. Together campers will decide what type of gallery(s) to create (traditional, immersive, salon-style, etc!), then build mini artworks to fill it! The dollhouse will then go on display in the ILYouth2 mall window!

On Tuesday, youth will learn the process of linoprinting: a relief printing technique involving carving, to make a reusable printing plate (essentially, a stamp!) We’ll practice on potatoes and foam, then level up to use real lino tools and lino blocks! Campers will get to keep their stamps, as well as a tote bag they design and print!

Shapeshift Studio: March Hangout!

Shapeshift Studio

  • Ages 10 - 17

  • $5-$15-$30 sliding scale (covers materials/studio access), scholarships available

  • REGISTER HERE!

  • Monthly, recurring (typically 3rd Saturday but check our calendar to confirm!)

  • 12-3pm, drop-in style hangout (stay for full or partial time ; bring a lunch if you’d like)

  • Youth must have an active Liability Waiver with ILYouth2 to participate. Youth who’d like to leave the studio on their own (ie: not be checked-out by a parent/guardian) must also have an active Independent Release Waiver with ILYouth2.

Shapeshift Studio is a monthly creative hangout for young therians and other youth who are interested in or curious about therians (otherkin and furries are welcome)! It is a space for middle and high schoolers to work on masks, tails, and creative projects ; have some space for quadrobics ; share about their theriotype ; and just connect with peers with shared identities, since this can be a smaller IRL community for young folks.

This hangout is facilitated by ILYouth2 director daelyn lambi (at the request of several of our therian youth artists!) daelyn is not a therian but is relatively educated on and hugely supportive of therians, furries, otherkins, and the many adjacent ways that people of all ages playfully explore identity and embodiment. They are especially invested in holding safe and intentional space for therian youth because of the higher rates of LGBTQIA2s+ and neurodivergent folks in the therian community. During these hangouts, daelyn really enjoys helping youth problem-solve creative projects, like constructing masks from scratch, using affordable and recycled materials.
